Nueschwanstein: This is the famous castle after which the Walt Disney castle was modeled. It's a castle of a much more recent vintage, that was started in the 19th century and never completed. It was claimed that crazy King Ludwig mortgaged all of Bavaria to finance that and many more building projects. Not surprisingly, one day he together with his mental physician were found dead in Lake Starnberg. Work on the castle stopped immediately. The interiors that were finished were meticulously painted and gold leafed throughout. His own bedroom took many craftsmen 4 years to complete. He finally got to sleep in the finished bedroom just 3 weeks before his mysterious death.
King Ludwig wanted to be a mystery to himself and others and he succeeded famously, even in death. No one knows what really happened that late and rainy evening. You can read more about it at http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/4080/home.htm.
