Wartburg: a beautifully maintained castle in its original state. It was a really steep climb up the hill to reach the gate. All castles used some sort of natural barrier to make it harder for attacking forces to make headway. You never see a castle in Germany built on level ground or in fields. Instead, the enemy would quickly run out of breath. Their cannons and shields would be difficult to haul up, and there would be no place to hide. Trees surrounding the castles would be cleared to leave the intruders open to arrows, rocks and whatever the defenders could throw at them including hot oil. Invasion forces would have to haul their own battering rams from a long distance. Some castles would also have motes surrounding the walls. Invaders most likely had to resort to some sort of trickery to help gain access.
